A soda, Proudly Made the Hard Way 

It all started with a simple question: Could we make a soda ‘the hard way?’ What would happen if we took our approach to sparkling water – with real squeezed fruit and careful cold-chain manufacturing – and go even further?  

What would happen if we turned the flavor intensity of our products up to 11? (Stopping short of adding engineered sweeteners, of course.) Could we double the real squeezed fruit, up the carbonation, and feature incredibly delicious ingredients like the best-tasting vanilla and ginger? Could our manufacturing processes and equipment handle it? 

Turns out: it’s a resounding chorus of YESes. But it took a full year to do it.  

Introducing a soda made the hard way – the right way – the better way – the Spindrift way. Because who would give ‘soda’ this kind of care, respect, and effort? We would.  

Spindrift Soda is an evolution of anything we’ve ever made. We’ve doubled the juice, upped the carbonation, and added other carefully sourced ingredients – like vanilla from Madagascar and ginger from Peru. 

You can call it a comeback 

Long-time fans might remember our original soda recipe with real squeezed fruit and cane sugar in glass bottles. Years ago, we retired the line to focus on sparkling water after deciding that we no longer wanted to use added sugar in our products. But people never forgot Spindrift Soda. Nearly every week, someone would email us or ask Bill Creelman, Spindrift founder, if we could make soda again. We never ruled it out – but we knew we’d have to approach it in a way that aligned with our ethos.  

“It took us over a decade of vast improvements to our ingredient sourcing, manufacturing processes, and overall quality. The groundwork the team laid over the years to make our sparkling water and Spiked products is what made Spindrift Soda possible today. Now we know we can create a product that stands up to the soda-drinking experience but relies solely on fruit – and not sugar or engineered sweeteners – for flavor. The original soda line was formative for us, but this new Spindrift Soda is everything we always wanted it to be. It's better, bolder, and braver than ever. I love it and I know consumers will, too,” said Bill. 

Challenging category expectations with fruit 

We’re obsessed with putting our own spin on iconic beverages – from sparkling waters to mocktails to spiked seltzers. Each proudly made the hard way with real squeezed fruit. Now, we’ve created unique spin on soda, bringing real squeezed fruit to a whole new level of flavor. 

What do people love about soda? They love the aroma, the taste, the richness. They love the memories they have pairing it with specific activities – going to the movies, going out to eat, going to parties or sporting events – there is a true longing we all feel for a crisp, delicious soda. But the ingredients really make soda unappealing to modern consumers. We saw that as the perfect challenge for us. 

 “Spindrift SODA is a challenge to the entire soda category. Legacy sodas leave so much room for brands like us to explore. Even new-school sodas are very sweetener-based, whether it’s with actual sugar or engineered sugar alternatives,” said Jon Silverman, SVP of Innovation. “We are very pointedly staying away from that. We challenged ourselves to make soda without anything sweet except real squeezed fruit.” 

 To create our 5 soda flavors, we worked to combine the best-tasting single-strength juices sourced directly from farms. And included a few new ingredients we’ve had our eye on for awhile like vanilla, ginger, and pomegranate.  

 Goodness from fruit – no shortcuts 

 “There are no shortcuts with Spindrift – and certainly none with Spindrift SODA. We’re in here carefully tasting fruit varietals and mixing purées and fruit extracts to capture a complex flavor profile. We take the long way – the right way. This product line has taken years and these specific flavors took us about a year to get where they are today,” said Silverman.  

“No one is making soda this way,” said Dave Burwick, CEO of Spindrift. “Even so-called modern soda brands are relying on concentrated juices and added sweeteners. Some have even added prebiotics to entice people to drink them. Spindrift SODA is a new standard for the industry. With this product, we’re going to redefine the soda experience.
