Spindrift Spotlight: About Our Farm-Sourced Blackberries

Spindrift Spotlight: About Our Farm-Sourced Blackberries
Blackberry winter, the time when the hoarfrost lies on the blackberry blossoms; without this frost, the berries will not set. It is the forerunner of a rich harvest. –Margaret Mead

Nature gets blackberries right. Did you know the blackberry isn’t technically a berry? The edible fruit, genus Rubus in the Rosaceae family, is technically called an aggregate fruit composed of small druplets. It is these dense, juicy druplets that farmers harvest at peak deliciousness - that inspired us to create Spindrift Blackberry.

Spindrift Blackberry

Ever since it debuted as a soda back in 2010 and again as a seltzer in 2016, Blackberry was one of our most popular flavors. It's a flavor that clicked with people, making them understand the real-squeezed-fruit difference of Spindrift. When you enjoy Blackberry, you get a full sensory experience of real blackberries in every sip - from the aroma to the mouthfeel of the purée to the deep hue you see when you pour it out into a glass. Drinking Blackberry is the quintessential Spindrift experience - and making Blackberry perfectly represents our hard-working ethos as a company.

Here at Spindrift, we love blackberries, freshly picked from brambles in the Pacific Northwest. The taste, aroma, and texture is incredible. So we do everything we can to respect and celebrate that quality in our Spindrift Blackberry. The recipe features blackberries two ways – as juice and purée – the real deal, no boiled concentrates or powdered substitutes – in every single can.

To us, nothing tastes better than real fruit planted, grown, and harvested – in nature. We're captivated by the complex, genuine taste of fruit and its authentic aroma and mouthfeel. Real squeezed fruit tastes brighter, sweeter, and more vibrant than anything artificial or juice concentrate could.

Blackberry is no exception. It is a flavor that requires extra care because blackberries have such a short growing season and require gentle handling upon harvest.

When a heat wave in 2021 devastated the blackberry crop in the Pacific Northwest, blackberries became scarce, quality was questionable, and costs were steep. Blackberries, already exceedingly fragile and costly in regular growing conditions, were now few and far between.

We were faced with a difficult decision. Ultimately, we did not want to resort to lower-quality ingredients or shortchange the flavor, so we decided to sunset the flavor altogether. It was challenging, but we knew it was the right decision. If something isn’t up to our rigorous standards, we won’t send it to market.

So, for 3 years, Blackberry was in the vault. But our team never forgot about the flavor we loved. Finally, in 2024, after 3 years of hard work, our team found a way to bring back Blackberry as limited release, single batch, online-only flavor just for fans.

Be sure to head to our online store on June 18, 2024 to stock up on Blackberry and enjoy its return. It's here for a good time - but not a long time. Just like blackberries themselves.
